Once, a man who was tired of trying out different methods for attaining peace of mind, as suggested by various saintly persons, came to Swami Vivekananda and said, ” I sit in a closed room and meditate for hours, but I am not able to attain peace of mind.” Vivekananda said to him, “First and foremost, keep the door of the room open. Then, look around for unhappy, diseased and hungry people and serve them in whatever way you can.”
For this, the man asked, “But what if I fall ill while serving diseased persons?” On hearing this doubt, Vivekananda replied, “I can say that you tend to find one fault or the other in every good task, which is why you are not able to get peace of mind. One should not wait for too long to begin an auspicious task. Similarly, one should not find faults in it. This is the only way of attaining peace of mind.”
